One of the most charming and sensitively written books I have read in a very long time is "A Cheetah's Tale" by HRH Princess Michael of Kent (Bradt Travel Guides 2017). The setting of this touching memoir is Mozambique in the early 1960s when a seventeen-year old Marie Christine von Reibnitz visited her father's farm there - a magical place where she encountered elephants, lions, snakes, and other beasts in a wild setting that has now mostly disappeared. In this intimate story, the future princess reconnects with a father she had not known well, embraces the adventure of the African wilderness, and lovingly hand rears an orphaned cheetah cub, which she must later release so that it can live freely. As Bradt states "the separation, when it comes, will touch every reader's heart":

"Beautifully written by a natural storyteller, 'A Cheetah's Tale' is a wonderful story of a vanished Africa, of a girl growing up and of the incredible bond that can exist between people and animals. I't certain to delight readers worldwide - this is the cheetah version of 'Born Free.'"

Novelist Philippa Gregory praises "A Cheetah's Tale" as "an enchanting glance into a world that has gone - a young woman's love of an orphaned cheetah cub and a happy ending ..."

In 2015, Princess Michael visited the New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston and received a lifetime achievement award for her distinguished work as a biographer, historian, and novelist. One of our most delightful, personable, and fascinating speakers ever, Princess Michael is the author of several books and is an internationally acclaimed speaker on historical topics. She lives with her husband, Prince Michael of Kent, a first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II, at Kensington Palace in London.
