Honoring an American legend: bestselling author David McCullough

On Friday, April 27, 2018 the New England Historic Genealogical Society will present Pulitzer Prize-winning author David McCullough with our Lifetime Achievement Award in History & Biography in a dinner at the Fairmont Copley Hotel in Boston. I will confer upon him a detailed history of his family and reveal a few genealogical surprises and bestselling author Stacy Schiff will moderate a conversation with David about his books, life, and personal interests. Join us for this rare opportunity to meet one of America's greatest historical authors.

McCullough, who spoke at our Sesquicentennial events in 1995, has been acclaimed as a “master of the art of narrative history.” He is twice winner of the Pulitzer Prize, twice winner of the National Book Award, and has received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian award.

His most recent book, The American Spirit: Who We Are and What We Stand For, a collection of his speeches and a New York Times bestseller, has been praised as “powerful,” “clarifying and uplifting,” “brilliant,” and a book “every citizen of the Republic ought to read.”

His widely praised book, The Wright Brothers, was a #1 New York Times bestseller and remained on the list for more than a year. The Greater Journey: Americans in Paris, also a #1 bestseller, has been called “dazzling,” “history to be savored.” His book 1776 has been acclaimed “a classic,” while John Adams, published in 2001, remains one of the most praised and widely read American biographies of all time.

He has been a familiar presence on public television—as host of Smithsonian World, The American Experience, and narrator of numerous documentaries including Ken Burns’s The Civil War. John Adams, the seven-part mini-series on HBO produced by Tom Hanks, was one of the most acclaimed television events of recent years.

He and his wife Rosalee Barnes McCullough have five children and nineteen grandchildren.

Our moderator, Stacy Schiff, is a 2017 NEHGS Lifetime Achievement Award Honoree and is the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Cleopatra, The Witches: Salem, 1692, Saint-Exupéry, Véra (Mrs. Vladimir Nabokov), A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America, and other acclaimed works.
